The Federal Government has called for collaboration between Nigerian nurses and midwives practising in the United Kingdom to make Nigeria a medical tourist destination.

The Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made this appeal at the 25th anniversary gala night of a United Kingdom-based Diaspora group, Nigerian Nurses Charitable Association in the UK, with the theme “Leading the Future Influencing Global Health.”

This was according to a statement released on Monday by NiDCOM spokesman, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.

Dabiri-Erewa commended the nurses and midwives for their charitable deeds and urged them to continue giving back to society.

According to her, President Bola Tinubu’s administration was committed to improving healthcare facilities and practice in Nigeria.

She, then, called for more collaboration through partnerships for knowledge exchange, telemedicine initiatives and skills transfer programmes.

“Nigerian healthcare practitioners in the Diaspora, working with their counterparts in Nigeria can make Nigeria a medical tourist destination,” the NIDCOM Chairman added.

Responding, the UK-based nurses and midwives called for a structured Memorandum of Understanding on migration of health workers between the Governments of Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

President of the association, Wendy Olayiwola, promised that they would continue to contribute their expertise through collaborations with medical institutions in Nigeria.

She harped on the need to create more platforms for networking and communication to foster a collaborative environment for sharing insights and best practices.

While commending Nigerians living in the UK, the Mayor of Southwark, Mayor Micheal Situ, pledged to effectively and efficiently serve the community.
