Police visit Nigeria’s ID agency, NIMC

The Nigeria Police has visited the nation’s ID agency to explore collaborations in the area of security of Nigerians, the National Identity Management Commission has said.

The National Identity Management Commission, the Federal agency for Nigeria’s national identity, issues the National Identity Number (NIN) and e-ID cards is also the custodian of the nation’s ID database containing information about registered Nigerians and residents of the country.

According to the Federal ID agency, senior officers responsible for technology at the Nigeria Police were in attendance during the visit to the NIMC headquarters in Abuja, NIMC said in a post on X, the social media platform formerly called Twitter. 

“The DG/CEO, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote , received in audience the Commissioner of Police in charge of Information Communication Technology (ICT), CP. Abel Miri, from the Police Force Headquarters, Abuja. The visit centered around the importance of National Identification Number (NIN) in ensuring the safety and Security of Nigerians,” NIMC said in the statement. 

“As it is known globally technology plays significant role in modern law enforcement to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of the agencies. Thus, it is imperative for modern law enforcement agency to have the capability to manage electronic databases and communication systems as global crime has become more sophisticated,” the ICT Unit of the Nigeria Police said on its website.

The Police ICT Unit manages and maintains the Automatic Fingerprint Identification System for the Force, while it also manages and maintains the tracking and interception system for the Police, among other responsibilities.
