An eye specialist and consultant in low vision in Warri, Delta State, Dr Comfort Omo-Irabor, says people with dark brown eyes have a higher risk of developing cataracts.

The expert, who described cataracts as clouding of the lens in the eyes that impede vision, said this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Warri.

She explained that cataracts could be congenital or hereditary.

Omo-Irabor, however, said that the Ultra Violet Rays from the sun, computers and cell phones are a known contributor to cataract development, no matter the colour of the eyes.

The optometrist called on Nigerians to go for regular eye checks, avoid smoking, manage other health conditions such as diabetes, and eat a balanced diet as part of ways to prevent the ailment.

She also advised people to wear sunglasses, and hats, reduce alcohol intake, and take anti-oxidants such as vitamins A, C and E, carotenoids, Lutein and others to prevent cataracts.

“Cataract is not a death sentence, the situation can be remedied. The best form of prevention is early detection. While under the sun, you need to protect your eyes,” Omo-Irabor added.

She explained that cataracts could be formed as a result of systemic conditions such as diabetes and toxic substances like long use of steroids.

According to her, the eye lens is a fragile organ in the body and can start degenerating, leading to opacification at the age of 40.

The eye specialist listed some symptoms of cataracts including blurred vision, trouble seeing at night, and frequent changing of eyeglasses, among others.

She said cases of cataracts were on the increase and called for increased awareness for its prevention.

“Women who roast plantain by the roadsides can confirm some of the symptoms because, over time, heat tends to opacify their eye lens,” Omo-Irabor added.
