No recent Lassa fever outbreak in Kaduna, says official

Kaduna State Primary Health Development Agency, says the state has not recorded any Lassa fever cases for the past few weeks.

The Director of Public Health, Ibrahim Hamza-Ikara, while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Kaduna, also said there are no pending cases of Lassa fever in the state.

He revealed that all the suspected cases have been discharged from the hospitals. Adding, “We have not recorded any Lassa fever cases for the past few weeks and all the remaining eight patients have been discharged.”

Hamza-Ikara said the state would sustain its sensitisation programme on how best to improve hygiene practices to the residents.

NAN recalls that on February 23, the state recorded four Lassa fever deaths, while three persons were admitted at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna.

Others who were suspected to have been infected were identified and closely monitored.

He urged the residents to maintain proper food and environmental hygiene and should immediately report any suspected cases of Lassa fever to the nearest health facility for prompt attention.

Lassa fever is a type of viral hemorrhagic fever, a group of viruses that can cause uncontrolled bleeding.

Most people who have Lassa fever experience mild symptoms like fever, headaches and fatigue.
