Michigan State basketball player Jeremy Fears was shot in his hometown of Joliet, Illinois, the Detroit Free Press and other media outlets reported Saturday.
The reports said Fears suffered a non-life-threatening wound to the leg and is expected to make a full recovery.
In a statement to the Free Press on Saturday, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said, “Jeremy underwent surgery this morning and is resting comfortably. While there is much we still don’t know, my focus is supporting Jeremy on his road to recovery.”
Fears, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound freshman guard, has appeared in all 12 of Michigan State’s games this season, starting none. He is averaging 3.5 points and 3.3 assists per game while logging 15.3 minutes per contest.
A four-star recruit in the class of 2023, Fears was rated the No. 7 point guard and No. 32 overall player in the nation per the 247 composite rankings.
This is a developing story.
