LASUTH moves to curb manpower shortage, trains orthopaedic technicians

The Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Professor. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, has said the training of students on anaesthetic and orthopaedics would help address the shortage of manpower in the field of orthopaedics.

Speaking at the matriculation ceremony of about 79 students of the Schools of Orthopaedic Cast Technology and Anaesthetic Technology of the tertiary institution, Fabamwo said the training of the students on anaesthetic and orthopaedic cast technicians, is to assist anaesthetists and orthopaedic surgeons.

The LASUTH CMD noted that the training of the students to become technicians would go a long way in curbing the manpower shortage in the health sector.

He said the need to strengthen the number of anaesthetists nationwide informed LASUTH’s decision to establish the school.

While congratulating the matriculating students, the professor of obstetrics and gynaecology assured them that the quality of knowledge they would be acquiring in these schools would open them to available opportunities.

The CMD admonished the students to pay attention to what they are being taught and put in the work that is required of them to succeed, as nothing good comes easy. He wished them well in their new endeavour.

The Commissioner for Health, Lagos State, Professor Akin Abayomi, charged the students to be good ambassadors of the institutions and remain focused.

Abayomi, who was represented by the Director Medical, Administration and Training, Ministry of Health, Mrs. Olufunmilayo Shokunbi, congratulated the matriculants as they became bonafide students of the schools.

The Keynote Speaker, Professor Oladipo Adewole who is also the Head of Orthopaedics & Trauma Department at LASUTH, spoke on the topic, “Together, each can achieve more.”

He highlighted the different ways teamwork can tremendously help them in achieving their goals as they embark on this academic journey.

He said teamwork encourages collaboration, creativity and innovation.

He went further to say that success in teamwork requires steadfastness, commitment, respect, impact and improvement in diversity.

Director of Clinical Services and Training, Professor Adebowale Adekoya, appreciated the commissioner and PS for Health, for their ever-supportive stance with the hospital.

He also applauded the officials of JAMB and NBTE, as well as members of the hospital management present.
