Lagos State Government has warned Uber Technologies System Nigeria Limited, operators of the popular ride-hailing service Uber over alleged data-sharing infractions.
Lagos State took the stance to preserve public safety and regulatory compliance in a move that signalled potential sanctions should Uber fail to adhere to critical data-sharing agreements, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Lagos State’s Commissioner for Transportation said.
The Honourable Commissioner expressed concern about Uber’s alleged failure to follow established rules, especially regarding sharing essential data interfaces (APIs).
Highlighting the pivotal role of API integration in facilitating real-time data exchange for government oversight and accountability during active trips, Osiyemi emphasized the non-negotiable nature of this requirement.
Uber’s ongoing non-compliance undermines efforts to ensure a safe and regulated transportation environment for Lagos residents, Osiyemi added.
“Propelled by an unyielding commitment to the safety and security of its residents, and failure to comply with essential data sharing agreement, the Lagos State Government is set to sanction Uber Technologies System Nigeria Limited,” Osiyemi said in a statement.
Highlighting the pivotal role of API integration in facilitating real-time data exchange for government oversight and accountability during active trips, Osiyemi emphasized the non-negotiable nature of this requirement.
He stressed the urgency of Uber’s corrective action to rectify its non-compliance with the Data Sharing Agreement and API integration mandated by Lagos State.
The Transportation Commissioner urged Uber to promptly resolve issues within the regulatory framework, warning that failure to comply would lead to severe sanctions in line with state laws.
He also advised Uber users to be cautious, as the sanctions would impact their operations as well.
