Google Doodle is known for honouring and giving recognition to people, who have done tremendous work in their respective fields in the past. This time Google gave space to 17th-century Dutch painter Judith Leyster on Monday in recognition of her artwork and paintings that she made centuries ago.

Born in 1609 in Haarlem, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Leyster made great financial success through her paintings. However, after she died in 1960, her work was almost forgotten by people. The painter died at the age of 50 years.

It is believed by the historians that all her paintings were attributed to male artists because of the mentality that the skill of painting only lies with the males. Historians believe that all her paintings were attributed to male artists. However, Leyster’s signature mark did not match with those who took credit for her paintings, and over 30 paintings of Lester were later recognized by the experts. Leyster finally got recognition for her work in the late 19th century.

“Misogyny and a forged signature caused art dealers to misattribute her paintings to male artists for decades,” says the Google Doodle archive on Judith Leyster. It was 1892 when Leyster finally got the recognition for her work when her signature didn’t match with the male artists.

Some of the first and most recognised artwork of Judith Leyster from 1629 are Serenade and Jolly Topper. The painter signed the painting in a unique way by writing J.L., crossed by a star.

Leyster not only made portraits, but also taught these skills to students by setting up her own studios. She also became one of the first women admitted to Harlem’s prestigious painters’ guild.
From 2009, the National Gallery of Art and the Frans Hals Museum started holding exhibitions every year in honour to Judith Leyster for recognizing her works and legacy in art and painting.
