Instagram has unveiled new tools, including a feature that automatically blurs nudity in direct messages (DMs) as part of the Meta Platforms-owned social media service to protect young users and curb sexual extortion.
The social media giant aims to fortify defenses against scams and “image abuse,” particularly targeting minors susceptible to online threats, Instagram said.
The platform’s decision comes amidst mounting criticism towards social media companies for inadequate protection of young users.
For senders sharing explicit content, Instagram will issue reminders about sending “sensitive photos” and offer options to unsend images if a change of heart occurs. Additionally, users can block senders and report concerning chats, reinforcing Instagram’s commitment to user safety.
Instagram combating prevalence of scammers soliciting ‘intimate images’ via DMs
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, Instagram’s parent company, expressed regret to parents affected by such abuses during a recent Senate hearing. Although Meta oversees platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp, the nudity blur feature is exclusive to Instagram’s direct messaging service.
Instagram highlighted the prevalence of scammers soliciting “intimate images” via DMs, necessitating robust preventive measures. The nudity protection feature, set to roll out soon, will automatically blur any nudity in images and prompt users to reconsider before sharing such content.
This feature, activated by default for users under 18 globally, will not shield recipients from unwanted nudity, but also thwart scammers coercing individuals into reciprocating with explicit images. Adult users will receive prompts to activate this feature, ensuring wider adoption of protective measures.

These proactive steps, according to the service, signify Instagram’s dedication to fostering a safer online environment, particularly for vulnerable user groups.
