Galaxy Backbone to ‘keep Nigerian government running’ amid undersea cable outages

Galaxy Backbone (GBB) will keep the Nigerian government’s networks running despite outages sparked by undersea cable cuts that have crippled telecoms and other critical services across West Africa, the technology services provider has said.  

Galaxy Backbone, a public enterprise of the Federal Government of Nigeria, which notified its customers about the recent internet disruption that has affected Nigeria, West and Central Africa, assured of its commitment to keeping their services running despite the disruption.

Galaxy Backbone plays a crucial role in developing digital infrastructure and advancing technology in the country, making significant contributions to the digital economy, the public sector technology company said.

“This is to notify you that you may experience some service degradation due to multiple undersea cable cuts across East and West Africa. However, as an aggregator of Internet service from multiple undersea cables, we are able to keep our services running despite this unforeseen service disruption,” Galaxy Backbone said.

Galaxy Backbone said on its official social media handle on Facebook that the technology company will keep the services of its customers running despite despite the unforeseen service disruption.

“This is to notify you that you may experience some service degradation due to multiple undersea cable cuts across East and West Africa. However, as an aggregator of Internet service from multiple undersea cables, we are able to keep our services running despite this unforeseen service disruption,” Galaxy Backbone said.

According to the technology company, “we understand the importance of maintaining a high level of service and will keep you updated on further developments.”

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has confirmed that outages witnessed in Nigeria was caused by undersea cable fibre cuts that affected major companies that operated across West Africa, including Nigeria.

MTN Nigeria, also apologised to its customers for challenges encountered while accessing internet and data service. “We apologize for the challenges you may be experiencing with internet speed and accessing data services at the moment”.

Also, the leading independent regional banking group in West Africa and Central Africa, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI), which has drawn attention of its customers to service fluctuations that has hampered the smooth running of transactions, has apologised for any inconvenience encountered during the period.

“We are currently, experiencing service fluctuation due to general internet outage as a result of undersea cable damage. This outage is not only nationwide, it also affected countries boarding the West African Coast. We apologise for the inconveniences caused by delayed transactions on our digital platforms. Please be assured that our team is actively working with our internet providers to find an alternative source to resolve this challenge swiftly”, says Ecobank.

Galaxy Backbone’s contributions to Nigeria’s digital agenda aims to improve service delivery, foster innovation, empower citizens, and strengthen the economy, the technology company said.
