Today on the Techpoint Africa Podcast, we welcome Tage Kene-Okafor and Titilola Oludimu as they join your fav, Oluwanifemi Kolawole, in the studio to bring you this week’s top stories in the African tech space.

We take a brief walk down memory lane, and our guest hosts share with their experiences while recalling fun/embarrassing moments from our first few episodes. Then we jump straight into the stories for the week.

First is Jumia Food shutting down its operations in Nigeria and six other African countries in a bid to focus on more profitable ventures. The hosts discuss what this closure would mean for the eCommerce giant’s pursuit of profitability and Jumia’s competitors, Glovo and Chowdeck, in their pursuit of market dominance.

Next up was a dive into the Global Skills Report released by Coursera. According to the report, despite having 1.7 million users on the massive open online course provider’s platform, Nigeria ranks last in skill proficiency. Our hosts look into the statistics, the reason for Nigeria’s seeming poor performance, and propose possible solutions to the likely obstacles faced by Coursera’s Nigerian users.

Finally, our hosts discuss Flutterwave hiring six executives who’ve worked at PayPal, Binance US, Cash App, Stripe, and Western Union. While there is speculation on what this could mean, Titi, Emmanuel, Tage all agree on a reason that might explain the move.

In other news, African unicorn, Chipper Cash is in the news for the fourth time in 12 months for laying off staff.

Our hosts, Oluwanifemi Kolawole, Tage Kene-Okafor and Titilola Oludimu, speak extensively on these stories while giving important — and sometimes sarcastic — insights.
