Nigerians have been advised to speak out and always seek help as they face the present economic crises, noting that things would eventually get better in the country.
The advice was given by a Consultant Psychiatrist and the President, Association of Psychiatrists of Nigeria, Dr Taiwo Obindo Obindo, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos.
While expressing concern that the economic situation in the country was not favourable, particularly, to the common man, he lamented that the suffering could lead to suicidal thoughts.
“The situation of things in the country is very disturbing. Virtually everyone is affected, even though some may seem to be comfortable, but the truth remains that the masses are suffering.
“But people should not give up hope; they should keep hope alive for a better Nigeria because nothing lasts forever; no matter how long, it will get better eventually,” he said.
Obindo said people should always speak out and seek help when facing challenges to avert suicide and that people should learn to extend helping hands to others and always endeavour to check on one another, particularly during this period.
The psychiatrist identified poverty and frustration as the main causes of suicide, regretting that some people in difficult economic situations would consider suicide rather than speaking out or seeking help.
He said, “There is a need for people to share their worries with others, and seek help rather than bottle them up to avoid depression and suicidal thoughts.
“Too much worry and depression can push people to commit suicide.
“Be your brother’s keeper; extend helping hands to others and always check on others to know how they are coping.”
The APN president implored governments at all levels to urgently address the economic hardship in the country and revive the economy to reduce poverty, improve living standards and reduce the suicide rate.
