We start off with an update regarding the rumored acquisition of 9Mobile’s spectrum by MTN. Following the acquisition buzz, The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) has called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to stop MTN from acquiring Emerging Markets Telecommunications Service Limited (9Mobile), as, in their view, such an acquisition will enable MTN to gain a monopoly over the telecommunications market.
Moving away from the telecom industry, we look at Lemfi’s announcement that they would be suspending their operations in Ghana following the release of a list of unapproved money transfer organisations by the Bank of Ghana on Thursday, November 16, 2023.
Next up was the announcement made by Kenya’s President, William Ruto, that by April 2024, Kenyan startups will get tax breaks. While for Emmanuel, the jury is still out on whether this provision will be properly implemented and achieve it’s purpose, I say it doesn’t hurt to be optimistic for Kenya’s future in the tech space.
Then some friendly banter ensues as we look at the story of football sensation Cristiano Ronaldo being sued by Michael Sizemore, Mikey Vongdaram, and Gordon Lewis over his promotion of Binance and the unregistered securities it offers US citizens.
Finally, Oluwanifemi breaks down the newest means being used by fraudsters to scam unsuspecting tech employees, with Emmanuel chipping in with his insights on the story and the issues arising from it.
