This week on the Techpoint Africa Podcast, our hosts, Bolu Abiodun and Chimgozirim Nwokoma are joined by Emmanuel Inyada, Managing Counsel at Aspen Sahel Legal, as they look into the top stories in the African tech space this week.

First, they delve into Moniepoint”s 2023 in review. The company doubled it’s workforce, and we discuss why and what prompted that decision, especially at a time where everyone is laying off. What do these growth metrics from 2023 tell us about their plans for 2024?

In 2023, we saw news of the competition regulator in Kenya giving Moniepoint the green light to acquire Kopo Kopo, a Kenya-based company offering payments services and credit to businesses. Chimgozirim speculates on this and other potential moves.

Next is Nigeria’s continued fight with PoS fraud.

The Nigerian Electronic Fraud Forum (NeFF) and Association of Mobile Money and Banking Agents of Nigeria (AMMBAN) are joining forces to fight PoS fraud in Nigeria.

Their plan is to create a feature on PoS machines that will flag fraudulent transactions and alert authorities on the location where that transactions happened. Sounds great but there’s a lot to consider here and Bolu questions the potential barriers and what the best approach to solving the problem is.

Last but not least is Sony Innovation Fund’s investment in South African gaming startup, Carry1st.

Sony launched a $10 million innovation fund for Africa last year and the plan is to invest in early-stage startups in gaming, music, film and content distribution. But first, how big is Africa’s gaming market? And what is the plan for Sony’s investment in Carry1st?

Today’s podcast is 35 minutes long and provides answers to all the questions listed above and others you might have.
