- Bboxx, a data-driven utility platform, has confirmed moving its headquarters from London to Kigali, Rwanda, highlighting its commitment as an Africa-first company.
- Because of this, Bboxx intends to invest over $100 million and train more than 1,000 Rwandans for the next five years.
- The company intends to grow tenfold, with a target of reaching 36 million people by 2028.
This move comes a month after forming a $100 million partnership with Kuwaiti investment firm EnerTech to provide new customers with clean energy, clean cooking, smartphones, smart financing, and e-mobility products.
Mansoor Hamayun (CEO), Chris Baker-Brian, and Laurent Van Houcke founded Bboxx in 2010 to eradicate energy poverty through clean energy. With a presence in 11 African markets, including Nigeria, Ghana, and Togo, the company serves more than 3 million people.
The company provides electricity and other essential goods and services to more than 10% of Rwandan households, including pay-as-you-go solar-powered water pumps, smartphones, clean cooking solutions, and electric cars.
According to Hamayun, this development strengthens the company”s commitment to becoming an Africa-first, data-driven platform that enhances lives and unleashes potential while bringing it closer to the communities it serves.
Furthermore, Francis Gatare, Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Development Board, revealed that this move by Bboxx aligns with the country’s efforts as a ”magnet for smart, sustainable investments.”
“Our unique ecosystem offers a fertile ground for companies like Bboxx to innovate and expand, signalling to the world that Rwanda is open for business and ready for the future,” he added.
Meanwhile, Bboxx launched in Nigeria in October 2021 as part of its commitment to grow in Africa, providing 20 million people with sustainable development and clean energy over ten years.
By making clean, reasonably priced, and dependable solar home systems more widely available, it hopes to address Nigeria’s electrification problems.
In September 2022, the company partnered with PEG Africa, a solar energy pioneer in West Africa, to expand its presence in Africa. This collaboration gave Bbox access to new markets in Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Mali.
