This week on the Techpoint Africa Podcast, we, in our usual manner, bring you insights into some of this week’s top stories in the African tech space.

But before we jump in, our hosts briefly dwell on the Africa Investment Report 2023 released by Briter Bridges and its submissions.

Briter Bridges says that the investment dip in the African tech space in 2023 isn’t necessarily as bad as it’s been painted. Why and how? To do this, it took a wholistic look at the investment scene in the past 10 years, beginning in 2012.

Our first major story for this week’s episode is Africa’s third-largest streaming platform, Amazon Prime Video, pulling out of its African, Middle Eastern, and Latin American markets in order to focus on European markets. This move will see the company reduce its headcount and cease original content production across these three regions.

They talk about why the company is pulling out, how this will affect the market and their competitors, and whether this will be the last we will ever see of them in these parts.

Next up, our hosts discuss and debate the news that Anambra State will be partnering with 26 big tech companies in its continued push to improve the state’s digital and tech-empowered standing.

Other moves made by the Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo-led administration include the adoption of the Nigeria Startup Act (NSA), the launch of the ‘Code Anambra’ as part of the Solution Innovation District by the state government in July 2023, and the implementation of a zero Right-of-Way fee in August 2023.

Our hosts, Oluwanifemi Kolowale, Bolu Abiodun, and Chimgozirim Nwokoma, speak extensively on these stories while giving important — and sometimes argumentative — insights.
