The National Association of Resident Doctors has called on the Federal Government to immediately address the manpower shortage and insecurity bedeviling the country.

NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi made this call at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday.

The association had during its 2024 National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja between 30 January and 3 February, deliberated on several challenges experienced by residents and doctors in Nigeria.

The issues highlighted include insecurity, failure of the government to implement the one-one clinical staff replacement, measures to tackle brain drain, poor financing and non-payment of salaries and arrears,

Abdullahi also highlighted assault to doctors, high school fees for medical students’ professional examination, maltreatment of staff by some Chief Medical Directors and poor remuneration as reasons for the migration of Nigeria’s healthcare workers.

He further called on the various medical examination bodies to withdraw recent increments to enable the students register and sit for their examinations.

The NARD president said the association has asked its local chapters to deliberate on modalities to address the issues raised and revert back within four weeks at which point an extraordinary general meeting would be held to discuss further actions to be taken.
