The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has banned smart watches and other wearable technology during the 2024 Unified Matriculation Examination (UTME) flagging off Friday with the participation of close to two million candidates.

JAMB said it has made arrangements to ensure the successful conduct of the 2024 UTME scheduled to take place from Friday, April 19 to Monday, April 29, 2024, across over 700 CBT examination centres in Nigeria.

JAMB, which announced that 1,985,642 candidates have registered for the 2024 UTME, has also released guidelines to help candidates prepare for the exam.

During JAMB examinations, candidates are prohibited from bringing certain items to the exam centres, such as smart watches, smart lens (unprescribed glasses), calculators, smart rings, smart pens, bluetooth devices, flash drives, and other electronic devices, the exams body warned.

Candidates are also to avoid using decorative designs or tattoos on their palms, as these can interfere with the biometric screening process at the centre, according to JAMB, which has asked candidates to follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth and fair examination process.

“Candidates are enjoined to adhere to the etiquette and guidelines of the examination as stipulated in their notification slips and be at the venue of their examination at the scheduled time so as to afford them the opportunity of going through biometric verification prior to their admittance into the examination hall,” according to JAMB.

“To signal the commencement of the process,” JAMB added, “candidates have been directed to print their 2024 UTME notification slips, which would enable them to know their examination centre as well as the date and time of their examination.”

The board further cautioned candidates against bringing prohibited items to the examination centres and emphasised the need for adequate preparation.

Accordingly, JAMB said that “candidates are warned to steer clear of all the prohibited items, which have been banned from the examination centres. These items have been noted to have aided some dishonest candidates in their quest to perpetrate examination malpractice hence, the ban on these items is to protect the sanctity of the Board’s examinations.”

“By understanding the exam structure, utilising quality study materials, practising with past questions, and following the exam day tips outlined in this guide, you are positioning yourself for success,” JAMB advised candidates.

The exams board has issued a warning that candidates who arrive 30 minutes late for the examination will not be allowed to sit for it. Such candidates will be marked as absent.

Additionally, the board has reiterated its zero tolerance for examination infractions and any other malpractice that could undermine the integrity of the examination.

The board also strongly advised parents not to be present in the examination premises with penalties for violators. “Parents are kindly requested to refrain from being around the examination premises, as the Board strictly prohibits parents from being present during the examination. Any candidate found with a parent in the examination vicinity will face penalties,” JAMB said.
