Oppo now promises up to four years of ColorOS updates on its select flagship models starting 2023.

Oppo now one-ups Google and matches Samsung when it comes to software updates. In a new press announcement, Oppo promises four years of ColorOS updates and five years of security updates. However, unlike Samsung, Oppo is reserving this announcement as a luxury for its high-end flagship models. Oppo says that only the 2023 flagship offerings from the company will get four years of ColorOS updates, not its more affordable models from the Reno series.

Note that Oppo only talks about ColorOS update and not Android updates. Hence, there is no guarantee whether Oppo will release new OS updates to these phones later in their lifecycle, or just release the ColorOS skins on top of older variants of Android. Those looking to long-term these phones will be pleased to see security updates for up to 5 years.

Oppo promises 4 years of ColorOS updates

As of now, Oppo is yet to announce which of the 2023 flagship phones will be eligible for the ColorOS updates for four years. It is likely that the recently announced Find N2 Flip and Find N2 along with the upcoming Find X models could get the updates. Note that India does not get any of the flagship phones from Oppo; the Reno series is its midrange offering in India.

Not sure which
mobile to buy?

On the other hand, Oppo has confirmed releasing the ColorOS 13 update to as many as 33 smartphone models globally. The ColorOS 13 update introduces features such as Smart AOD, Multi-Screen Connect, Home Screen Management, and much more.

In the Android universe, it is Samsung that leads the software update cycle. Samsung promises up to four years of Android OS updates and five years of security updates for its 2022 Galaxy S, Galaxy Z, Galaxy A series devices and a few Galaxy M series devices. Google promises three Android OS updates on its Pixel 7 series devices and up to 5 years of security updates.

However, it is Apple that leads the industry with up to 5 years of OS updates. Although Apple doesn’t promise and boast about it officially, iOS updates at least support 5 year old iPhones.
