Google supports African startups in new accelerator cohort focused on tech innovation

  • In a bid to further fuel Africa’s thriving tech landscape, Google has announced its latest cohort of startups selected for the 2024 Google for Startups Accelerator Africa.
  • This year, the accelerator features a strong presence of African innovators, with startups from across the continent focused on tackling challenges through cutting-edge solutions in sectors like fintech, healthtech, and artificial intelligence. 
  • The program offers mentorship, resources, and equity-free support, aiming to scale startup solutions.

The Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program, launched in 2018, has provided significant backing to over 106 startups from 17 African countries, with past participants collectively securing $263 million in funding and generating over 2,800 jobs across the continent. 

Selected startups gain access to Google’s extensive network, positioning them for industry growth and impact.Through equity-free support, mentorship, and exclusive access to Google’s resources, these startups are well-positioned to bring transformative change to Africa’s digital economy.

Notably, the program focuses on startups leveraging artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies to address systemic challenges in African markets, such as financial inclusion, healthcare accessibility, and educational reach. 

This year’s cohort includes a mix of industry-specific innovators:

  1. Aveade: A digital marketplace designed to connect buyers and sellers, prioritising accessibility and offering a diverse product selection.
  2. Breaze Delivery: A real-time delivery platform that connects businesses with a network of drivers to facilitate fast and efficient deliveries.
  3. Mapha Logistics: A company equipping township, peri-urban, and rural merchants with digital tools to simplify and optimise business processes.
  4. Swagshack: An online streetwear marketplace that links emerging fashion brands with customers, streamlining order and delivery services.
  5. Vuleka: An e-commerce and fintech platform that connects informal township businesses to customers through both online and offline channels.
  6. Wisi-Oi: A video-driven fashion resale platform that is transforming the buying and selling of pre-owned clothing.

The startups selected for 2024 are positioned to make substantial contributions not only to their industries but to the broader economy, contributing to job creation, skill development, and technological advancement. Google’s sustained investment in African startups is both a catalyst for growth and a testament to the continent’s potential to influence the global tech landscape through homegrown innovations.
